Four questions to facilitate discussion regarding our reading of Night in my placement.
- Put yourself in the shoes of Elie Wiesel: How would you react if you were asked to leave your home to an unknown place? What thoughts are going through your head? What are your fears? Would you have risked death to escape?
- Why do you think Elie and his family refused to listen to Moishe the Beadle? What was he saying that made the family refuse to believe him? How would you have reacted? Now think geographically and historically: Why do you think that Elie Wiesel and his family had not heard about the Holocaust and concentration camps by 1944?
- How has this book changed or reinforced your beliefs of the horrific tragedy that is the Holocaust? What have you learned, what has changed for you? What did you already know?
- Offer predictions: How do you think the new concentration at Buna will compare to Auschwitz? In what ways do you think it will be similar? In what ways do you think it will be different?
